This service is for Australian citizens wishing to marry overseas, where the foreign government has requested a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage (CNI).

Ensure to complete the application form for a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage (CNI). The form is available on www.smartraveller.gov.au/services/legalising-documents/Pages/overseas.aspx

Please DO NOT sign the form as it needs to be witnessed by a consular officer.

What to bring to the appointment:

- Passports of both parties.

- Completed UNSIGNED application for a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage (CNI). The form is available on www.smartraveller.gov.au/services/legalising-documents/Pages/overseas.aspx.

- If either of you have been married before, evidence of the dissolution of the previous marriage.

Preparation and issue of a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage (CNI)

Select this option for a child, who is less than 16 years of age.

You may apply for this passport online; you are not required to visit the Consulate. Please see our website www.chennai.consulate.gov.au for further details. 

Children under 16 years do not need to attend the passport interview. One parent or person with parental responsibility for the child must come to the appointment.

Please ensure you bring the following for your passport appointment:
•	You will need to complete a new overseas passport application form which can be accessed online at Australian Passport Office (passports.gov.au)
•	Birth certificate
•	Citizenship certificate (both sides)
•	Parents current passport 
•	Aadhaar card (Parents)
•	OCI card 
•	2 photographs. Please ensure the photographs are of the highest quality
 
To assist with completing the overseas application form, we have provided some pointers below:
 
1. Page 1 - Personal details
This page should be completed using the information on the applicant’s birth certificate and citizenship certificate. When you enter the citizenship certificate number at section 3, please use the “ACC” number printed on the reverse of the Citizenship Certificate or the “CBD” number on the Citizenship by Descent certificate. 
 
2. Page 4/ 84F - Consent
When completing this page, please input the information as per the applicant’s birth certificate. 
 
For example, the details should be completed as mentioned below:
13a - Parent 1’s name as mentioned on the child’s birth certificate
13b - Parent 1’s name as mentioned on their passport
13c - Parent 1’s Australian Passport details (if applicable)
 
14a - Parent 2’s name as mentioned on the child’s birth certificate
14b - Parent 2’s name as mentioned on their passport
14c - Parent 2’s Australian Passport details (if applicable)
 
You will also need to ensure Parent 1 and Parent 2 sign this page and have it correctly witnessed/ dated. Please ensure witness should not be related to the applicant/ family. 

3. Parents proof of identity

Copies of both parents’ identity documents that show their name, photo, signature, and current address (i.e., both parents and those with parental responsibility for the child who signed section 17 on the application form)
Name changes: If the current names of either parent are different to how they appear on the child’s birth certificate, please include certified documents that explain the change of name.
 
4. Signatures and dates
Before submitting the application, please double check you have signed and dated the form (wherever applicable). You should also check the guarantor and witness have completed their sections in full. Dates should be entered in Australian format (dd/mm/yyyy) and should not be more than six months old. 
 
5. Photos

Western Australia- Witnessing a Signature or Seal on a Form or Declaration

This service is for certifying Australian documents or foreign documents intended for use in Australia.

Documents will be certified with the following wording, "I certify that this is a true copy of the document presented to me”.

We cannot provide alternative wording. It is your responsibility to ensure that the receiving authority of the certified document will accept the copy.

- The ORIGINAL documents for certification.
- Evidence of why the certified documents are required (instructions from the requesting authority in Australia).

This service is for the issue of Authentication or Apostille on Australian original documents.

Ensure to confirm with the requesting authority the required service (Authentication or Apostille) will be accepted.
